How To Protect Your Family From A Fire Ant Infestation

Ants are always a nuisance when you find them where you don't want them, but one of the worst types of ants you can encounter is a fire ant. This type of insect has the ability to cause painful bites and can even become dangerous. You will need to identify whether you have fire ants and then contact an ant exterminator to protect both you and your family.

Fire Ant Homes

Fire ants live in anthill mounds like many other ant species. However, one characteristic of fire ants that is distinct is that they do not have a single entrance. Instead, they enter and exit the anthill mount from several locations.

Identifying a Fire Ant

Fire ants look similar to other types of ants. However, they often have a bright red color. However, some fire ants are black. The two main types of fire ants are native fire ants and imported fire ants.

You will most likely encounter fire ants if you live in a warm, tropical climate. They need water, and you will be more likely to attract fire ants if your home has a leak and the ants have easy access to water.

Fire Ant Exterminators

If you contact an ant exterminator, they will try to locate the ant mound on your property. There are several types of insecticides that can be used to kill fire ants. The anthill can be drenched in a liquid insecticide. A powdered version of the insecticide can also be sprinkled on the anthill, covering the openings. The insecticide will then stick to the ants and kill them.

The ants in the ant mound must be killed. If you simply destroy the ant mound, the fire ants will simply construct another one. Therefore, it's important to contact an ant exterminator who will know how to completely eliminate ants from your property.

Remaining Safe Around Fire Ants

Fire ants can be very dangerous, and getting stung by these insects can lead to difficulty breathing and swallowing. Anyone who is experiencing a severe allergic reaction might need an epinephrine auto-injector. Because fire ants can be so dangerous, it's best to have a professional deal with a fire ant infestation.

While you are waiting for the exterminator to arrive, make sure that everyone wears shoes, socks, and long pants while outside. Remain safe until the exterminator is able to eliminate the fire ant infestation.

About Me

Focusing On Pest Control

After dealing with bug infestations in my home for a few years, it occurred to me that I had to do something to make things right. I began thinking about all of my available options, and I realized that working with a professional pest control contractor was one of my best bets. I talked with them about the kinds of bugs that I was finding in my home, and they were really helpful. They came out, sprayed, and even applied some protective treatments around the outside of my house to deter future issues. I wanted to start a blog all about pest control, so I made this website. Check it out.
